CABARETS

"Cabaret is an all-encompassing performance genre and can include singing styles from Broadway to jazz to folk music and everything in between."
Cabaret shows can be anything you want them to be. They can have themes - a celebration of your favorite composer, a specific era in history, favorite songs from childhood, the music of your home region, etc. They can use songs to embellish anecdotes. You can engage with the audience or pretend they aren’t there. You can be yourself or create a fictional character to perform as. It is a way of storytelling that you won’t find anywhere else in Cambridge theatre. Themes of Cabarets in the past included 'Liquor and Lust', 'Pretty Ugly', 'Sam and Ava Take On The World' (a fictional friendship formed in the ADC splitting apart).
It is a way to work beyond the CUMTS Shows and Bar Nights every term, creatively making your own 1 hour of entertainment in the Larkum Studio. We see this as an invitation to those who want to blend their passions for music & theatre outside working on musicals to do so in a low-intensity and lower-commitment way. Because this is a new endeavour, CUMTS is happy to support experimentation and a diverse range of ideas! You can apply as a team of performers and/or accompanists, or individually as either role and ask to be grouped with another applicant! Keep an eye on Facebook and the What's On page of the website to keep track of upcoming cabaret application packs and performances.
If you’re interested but still not sure what cabaret is, or want to check if ideas you have might be suitable: send an email to president@cumts.co.uk and someone will get back to you. Or, buy a ticket to the next one to enjoy a fun night and see what it's all about!
